Pack of the Mountains Rime

Enter our world of THE HINTERLANDS...

MHWI-Wulg Render 001

The Hinterlands. A land of seemingly endless ice and snow and glorious mountains. The locale in which the clever Wulg resides. Many, many generations ago the first Wulg set his frost-covered paws in this wild land, and ever since— the legacy remains. Although much smaller and weaker than their competition, the Wulgs of the Hinterlands have used their intelligence and persistence to survive in an unpredictable and unforgiving world.

DIRECTORS
1/5
Directors, or managers are the ones that make decisions for, and help, the group outside of roleplay. The rank of their characters does not affect this rank, and vice versa. They are marked by a ✮ so that they can be identified as the group's managers.
The leader of the group is a special Director who is identified by a special star (✥) to indicate their leadership role.

The Sapphire Star

The Sapphire Star is believed to be a great dragon, superior in power to any other monster, who created the world as the Wulgs know it. According to legend, the old world was a barren place, filled with hatred and fear. A star-- the Sapphire Star-- fell from the sky and landed in the middle of the world, burying itself under the dry earth. A great dragon emerged from the ground during the worst time, when the old monsters were all fighting each other. Fuelled by the hatred and rage of all the clashing beasts, the Sapphire Star destroyed the world and then, using the energy from the destroyed world, created an entire new world. It is said that after this feat the Sapphire Star returned to the heavens, only returning to earth to help the monsters when they were in dire need.

Many generations ago, before years were even counted, the First Wulg saw a bright blue star in the sky. He chased it, and soon discovered the Hinterlands. The Sapphire Star had led him to the Wulgs' home.

Just a mere fifty years ago, the Wulgs watched with awe a blue star fall out of the sky and land in the regions not too far away. Ever since that incident, more prey and monsters began showing up everywhere. The Wulgs were, and still are, thankful that the Sapphire Star helped them once again by providing them with plenty of prey and food to survive.

However...

Recently, strange bipedal creatures that no Wulg had ever seen or heard of before began invading the Hinterlands, killing monsters and stealing prey. The previous Alpha declared that he would try to make an effort to talk to them to sort things out despite the protests of the Varamies, Goshawk. Some Bardagamenn were sent out to try to talk to them first, but to the horror of the pack none returned. Only two bodies of the five who had been killed were ever found. The Alpha decided to approach them himself and according to the report he realized neither parties could understand each other. The Alpha was slain, and Goshawk became the new Alpha. He ordered the Wulgs to retreat, and they did.

Just after the Alpha was slain, a blue star fell out of the sky a third time. The Wulgs believe that these strange, greedy creatures have angered the Sapphire Star and if the bipedal beasts do not stop their actions, the Sapphire Star will destroy the world once more.

Practises

Every five years hundreds upon hundreds of dragons (these dragons are less powerful than the Sapphire Star, but are still extremely destructive and deadly) from a region far away can be seen flying towards the territories just beyond the Hinterlands. This spectacular event is dubbed the Draconic Migration. The Wulgs believe that to avoid being attacked by these dragons they must preform the Great Roar to drive them away from the Hinterlands. At sundown on the same day that the first dragons are spotted the Wulgs will gather together on the cliffside facing the ocean. Then upon the Alpha's count, the Wulgs will collectively imitate the dragons' roar as loudly as possible. It is said that the louder the roar, the more dragons will be scared away and the more prey there will be until the next Draconic Migration.

Wyverntongue is an old language that the majority of monsters are fluent in but Wulgs are not. Only the Tjuserska knows how to speak such a language and for important ceremonies involving large monsters the Tjuserska may be required to speak Wyverntongue. Wulgs speak their own language, one that they call Common. The Wulgs aren't the only species that can speak Common, however, but most monsters do not know how to speak this language. The bipedal beasts (humans, although the Wulgs do not have a name for them) speak a completely different language that only they seem to understand.

Wulgs

Wulgs are creatures that resemble both badgers and wolves. Their size varies and they can be anywhere from 30 to 40 inches tall at the shoulder, not depending on gender. However, males have retractable blue spurs on the 'wrists' of their front paws, which can be used to keep a steady and firm grip on difficult prey, and females lack these spurs, instead having a pair of scent glands beneath their tails. These scent glands can both produce a spray similar to a skunk's to ward off attackers and can also produce pheromones to let males know if they're in heat. All Wulgs have black-and-white patterning, but the exact patterns can vary from individual to individual; for example, one Wulg may have a white blaze on their face, and another may lack this blaze but have all white (or black) paws, or a black tip of their tail. They all have orange-yellow eyes and lack discernible ears, and have an excellent sense of smell. Wulgs are also great at digging and will make temporary burrows beneath the snow if there is a blizzard, and they are also great leapers; just like a fox, they can launch themselves into the air and nosedive into the snow to catch prey hiding beneath the snow, such as Moly, Snowy Rats and Rime Hares.

Moly, Stonebills, Macaques, King Marlin and Crestfish are the main larger prey of Wulgs. Sometimes a Wulg may also be able to snatch a Shepherd Hare if they are quick enough. Smaller prey exists too, mostly Snowy Rats, Rime Hares, various small fish (such as Silverfins, Snappers, Hoargliders and Tipswimmers), and small birds such as Cheeridees, Treepeepers, Whitewings and Hummingjays.

Wulgs may also hunt down herbivorous monsters if there are more than one Wulg hunting together. Anteka are the most common but occasionally Wulgs may even attempt to fell a Banbaro if the hunting party is large enough and if the Banbaro is weaker than normal (sick, injured, very young or elderly).

Wulgs are physically capable of bearing pups once they reach one year old and reach full maturity at two years. Once a Wulg reaches one year old they will be treated as an adult and if they feel that they are brave and strong enough the Wulg (almost always a male) will leave their birth pack to found a new pack that they will consequently become the leader of. Wulgs can live for up to forty years, considerably longer than the average feline or canine.

While in The Pack of the Mountains Rime, you must abide by several rules.

Do not discriminate against other group members, for any reason. Every group member must be treated with the same amount of respect. (The only exception of this rule would be jokingly teasing someone if you and the other members of the group are playing a game outside of roleplay together, but you must be careful to not let the teasing go too far.)

Power-playing is not allowed within this group. While the Pack of the Mountains Rime is set in a fantastical universe, it still has many aspects of realism. Please ask before killing or injuring another person's character, even when sparring (sparring is allowed, but frowned upon, in this group). And for stars' sake, please ask the Directors before proceeding with a plot, no matter how big or small.

Hybrid characters are not allowed. Due to Wulgs being the only species of their kind, they are incapable of producing offspring with any other animal. However, your character is allowed to interact with other species (outside of group roleplays), due to the Pack of the Mountains Rime being set in a universe much like our own but with more, and different, creatures.

Character names should ideally be winter-themed (or at least nature-themed) and should be actual words, but they can also be words from other languages or 'corrupted' words. Unrelated human names, such as 'Rachael', are prohibited; however, unrelated human names that are also actual words may be allowed depending on circumstance. Warrior names are also not allowed (there are exceptions). If you are unsure about your character's name, please ask the Directors first.

We are a side-group, which means we allow double-grouping. We do not ask for permission from the leader of your main group when you are joining, because we do not wish to be involved with any drama caused by any disagreements. We will not deal with any situation regarding you breaking the rules of another group by being in our own, as it is a choice that you have made, not us. However, spying on another group outside of plots and/or just creating drama with another group and ours will not be tolerated and if you are caught doing so, (depending on severity) you will immediately be banned from the Pack of the Mountains Rime.

There is no character limit, so long as all of your characters are active and you are not hogging up high-rank spots for other people who may want them.

You may leave and re-join as many times as you wish, so long as you are not purposefully trolling by doing so. If you are removed for inactivity and re-join, you will be asked to be more active, but you will not be banned or suspended from the group for re-joining (unless you were previously banned/suspended).

Improperly portraying characters with a disability may get you punished, depending on severity of insensitivity. While disorders and disabilities are likely to affect animals differently than humans, it is not an excuse to heavily stereotype a character. Please educate yourself before giving a disability to a character.

Currently, the only out-of-roleplay punishments are being suspended and being banned from the group. In-roleplay, the punishments can vary; by no means may a character be punished in-roleplay if the character's owner did something out-of-roleplay. However, if the character's owner is banned from the group, all of their characters in the group will have committed a crime behind the scenes according to the Pack of the Mountains Rime's canon storyline and said characters will be banished.

The code word will be changed every week once the group is officially open. You must hide the codeword somewhere in your form, and not make it obvious (that is why there is not an 'other' or 'code' section on the joining form). As of date, the code word is the second word of the famous Shakespearean play Romeo and Juliet (not of the title, but of the actual play script itself).
